Choosing the right supplements for your dog or cat

Monday, June 13th, 2011

If you share your life with a  dog, or a cat, you may have found the world of nutritional supplements to be  a confusing impenetrable jungle.  In fact, most people are so confused that they often resort to the extremes. They either use no supplements at all or fill their kitchen cabinets and counters with dozens of bottles. Almost everyday I am asked by  clients for an opinion about supplements and my curiosity has led me to explore the supplement world  which often reminds me of sailing uncharted ocean waters.

Many people believe that if they feed good quality food or the best natural food that their dogs or cats diet will be complete. This is not true.

Intensive agriculture has caused a severe degree of soil mineral  and nutrient depletion which has caused deficiencies in the whole food chain including plants, herbivores and finally carnivores.  We have seen sailors dying of scurvy, iodine deficiency causing goiter, vitamin B deficiency causing beri-beri, a neurologic disease and death. It is a paradox that most people and even medical practitioners do not ask the (more…)

Detox Your Pet – Why and How

Friday, May 27th, 2011

Recently, I have had the pleasure to interview one of the Vancouver’s most talented healers, Ryan Carnahan on a very interesting topic of detox.  Heavy metals are one of the most serious pollutant and disease causing factors out  there.  Learning how to detox naturally may ad months and years to your best friends life.  I hope you will enjoy this interview.

With gratitude,

Dr. PD:

Hi  Everyone,  I have the pleasure to  introduce you to Ryan Carnahan  who has  been  very  kind and  agreed for me to interview him. Hot spots – diagnosis and treatment the natural way

Sunday, May 1st, 2011

If you have ever seen a dog dressed in a  T-shirt laced up the back or another one looking like a punk with bald spots  shaved all over his body, his owner doesn’t  need to be  an eccentric dog person.   The poor  pooch may be dressed or  shaven because  of hot spots.

Depending on what hemisphere you are in, summer  may be in  full swing  and hot spots are likely to be  a hot topic under the even hotter summer sun.   It is also one of the most misunderstood  problems under the sun.

Things often are not what  they appear to be.

For years,  I lived in oblivion, believing that hot spots were the result of hot weather, swimming and scratching,  sometimes fleas may be in the equation.  Frequently, a dog with hot spots is pronounced allergic which stands (more…)

A simple HUG

Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

Weekends are usually my writing time and today I was planning to write on pancreatitis, urinary incontinence and other medical stuff that some readers requested and then I got an e-mail from one of my friends that was titled “hugs from me and Buddy.” This e-mail contained a link to a YouTube video that not only made me tear up but also made me change my plan and write about most important things in life, connection with other people and animals, our friends are family and being part of a community.

Often I ask myself, is all the hurry really necessary and why don’t we have enough time for her really matters to us, a dog walk, a cuddle with a cat, conversation with your partner, children or a friend and yes, a hug.

We have built up all this clutter and mind noise in our lives and it keeps us away from living. This video is a great reminder of  how important a simple hug is. I’m sending one to you, your cat or dog  and promise that as soon as I post this blog post I will get back to bring you more information about how to keep your animal friends healthy and long living.

With gratitude,

Dr. Peter Dobias

PS:  Enjoy the hug video!

Protecting your pet from radioactive fall out

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

Quite a few  people  have asked me what  to do  to  protect  your  pets from RADIOACTIVE FALL OUT and if they should use Potassium Iodide for their pets.  While the risks  of increased radiation in  North America are low, it never hurts  to learn the important facts.

What does Iodine do?

Following a radiological or nuclear event, radioactive iodine may be released into the air and then be breathed into the lungs. Radioactive iodine may also contaminate the local food supply and get into the body through food or through drink. When radioactive materials get into the body through breathing, eating, or drinking, we say that “internal contamination” has occurred.

In the case of internal contamination with radioactive iodine, the thyroid gland quickly absorbs this chemical. Radioactive iodine absorbed by the thyroid can then injure the gland. Because non-radioactive Iodine acts to block radioactive iodine from being taken into the thyroid gland, it can help protect this gland from injury.

What an Iodine supplement cannot do

Knowing what a good source of Iodine cannot do is also important. It cannot prevent radioactive iodine from entering the body. It  can protect only the thyroid from radioactive iodine, not other parts of the body. It cannot reverse the

Fed up with the state of health care? You can be part of the solution.

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

So many of us are concerned about the current state of medical system and the fact that the governments of many countries are crumbling under the burden of skyrocketing medical costs.

More then a half  of  most  countries’ budgets goes to the healthcare. Thousands of people and animals are dying unnecessarily from the side-effects of drugs.

How can we make a difference and change this situation. How can we help those who do not  believe this understand

Your dog is no garbage bin! A few things you should know

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Lately, I have heard of some people cutting corners by feeding mixes of left over meat from meat packers. Because there are currently no regulations that would prohibit selling meat that is spoiled or not suitable for sale as dog food, I highly recommend not going that route and buy your raw pet food from a reputable manufacturer that is known for its quality and integrity.

If the defrosted package doesn’t smell the same as good quality meat for human consumption, discard it immediately and  look for another supplier. (more…)

Who is wrong? Nature or processed pet food giants?

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

Many veterinary clinics sell thousands of  dollars worth  of processed food. These  sales have become one of the ways of bringing in the  needed income to cover the skyrocketing costs of running a veterinary practice. It may surprise you  that  an average vet earns less then a plumber or a contractor.

Transform your life and have more time for your animal friend!

Are you  busier  than you would like to be?

Do you feel  guilty  leaving your animal  friend  behind  when you are busy at work or with life in general?

Are you feeling like the world  is speeding up and at  any moment  you are going to fall on your face because the treadmill is going  much too fast?

I too have been challenged  so many  times;  trying to  find more time  to spend with my  friends and family, including Skai and Mina,  my  pets.

Are we getting busier because based scientists say  the universe is  speeding  up?

Maybe,  but  I  have stubbornly defended  the  idea that  life doesn’t  need to be a crazy  madness and that it is up  to us to make it better and more balanced.   I don’t mean perfect because that is  much  too close to boring.

What I  enjoy  is the process of  finding solutions,  making life better, simplifying, listening to our heart and doing what  we love.

I hope you will  enjoy this 20 minute podcast that  I recorded  without  preparation and cutting.  It  may give you some ideas on  how you can find you own way to create the life you imagine.

I urge you to follow  your  heart,  listen to your  soul and simplify… if you would like a good  read on that  subject.  I love the book called  Power  of  Less by  Leo Babauta ; 4 hour  work week by Timothy  Ferris and Inspiration by Wayne Dyer.

Enjoy the podcast!

Just thinking – What is wrong with us? (by Michelle Saari)

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Laying awake for hours, light bulb moment, what’s wrong with us?

Hi Peter

Thank you for teaching us to be more proactive with our pets and ourselves. It suddenly occurs to me that the reason for a lot of our problems is that we want that “magic pill”.

If someone is told they have high cholesterol, they want a pill to make it go down so they can continue to fuel their bodies with the junk that caused it.

When they have a sore joint, they want a pill to dull the pain, instead of curing the cause of the pain.

When they cough, they want something to stop the cough.  (isn’t a cough a normal way of clearing the passage?)

When we have a fever, we immediately want to get it down. (Isn’t fever natures way of fighting something bad in our bodies?)

If we are overweight, we want a magic pill to shed the pounds because it is easier than proper diet and exercise.

Allergies are a natural defense.  Unless it is extreme, as all the above mentioned ailments) why do we want to put a blanket over them.

The pharmaceutical companies are rich because they have convinced us that this is the answer to everything.  Shame on us for believing it.
Thanks for listening.

Michelle Saari
