The 2012 HealthOver Program

Monday, January 30th, 2012

On Saturday January 21st, I had the pleasure of announcing our new and exciting project for 2012, the $5000+ Free Health-Over ( holistic healthy make over ) project!

If you missed the announcement, I will give you a run down on what this is. We will be choosing four lucky dogs along with their owners, to participate in a revolutionary 6 month long holistic treatment program. We will put you together with a Naturopathic Physician, a Chiropractor, a Physiotherapist and a Veterinarian for an initial assessment consultation, and will then follow you both over the course of six months and document how a Holistic lifestyle can improve your life and the life of your dog.

Our goal is to show that dogs and their people can go through a positive health transformation by using natural means and eliminating processed food and chemicals. We also know that the health of people and their pets is closely connected and that is why we decided to involve you and your dog together at the same time.

Anyone can apply, regardless of yours/your dog’s current state of health (or lack thereof),

The lucky chosen, will be asked to commit to following through the full six month program, attending all scheduled appointments with each practitioner, documenting progress both for yourself and your dog, and you must be willing to appear on camera and discuss your case.

In order to ensure serious applications only, the chosen participants must be willing to sign an simple agreement and submit a deposit of $500, *which will be refunded in full* when the program finishes and all commitments are fulfilled no matter what the results will be.

Deposits will not be returned if you drop out early, or fail to fulfill your obligations.

To apply, simply fill in the questionnaire below and submit the form to us by March 31, 2012 for your chance at this once in a lifetime opportunity! Candidates will be selected on the basis of their suitability for the project and also the earliest application. The 4 candidates plus 4 reserve candidates will be chosen by the end of April and the program will be starting in May or June 2012.

Please submit only one application per dog, if multiple pets are entered, only one will be chosen per family. ALL questions must be answered or the application will be void.

We are looking forward to reading all of your submissions, good luck to each and every of you!

With gratitude,

BACK TO BASICS SERIES – CHAPTER 1

Learn about weaning, feeding, supplements and natural approach to vaccination

While one could think that puppies are born with a clean slate, the reality is that they often carry “a baggage full of problems” from previous generations.  These problems are not just genetic. It appears that puppies are also burdened by the imbalances and health issues  of their parents that were exposed to excessive vaccination, poor nutrition, stress and the use of immune-suppressive drugs such as anti-inflammatory and corticosteroids .

I am saying this because many people who get a new dog question what they have done wrong while they really have done everything right. (more…)

Surgery can seriously hinder the body’s ability to recover

Saturday, July 16th, 2011

For months now,  I have been  meaning to write a blog on surgery. This discipline is  often considered the pinnacle of modern medical care and surgeons are often looked upon as gods. However being a surgeon for more  23  years and  performing a variety of surgeries as a vet,  I have come to a conclusion that surgery is one of the most controversial discipline that definitely has  its dark side.

In fact everything in nature has a good and bad side. Water is a life saver and can also  be a killer,  atomic power can be good or bad, the sun rays  are essential to all life on this planet but also cause cancer and can burn everything to ashes. The same polarity applies to surgery because it can be  life saving and it can destroy lives and I don’t only mean Michael  Jackson.

Most people are aware about the positive aspects of surgery.  A surgeon can re-attach a cut off finger or even an arm,  transplant a kidney or heart, repair fractured bones and suture  wounds caused by an accident.  This is the good part. The problem is that the more advanced it gets, the more it is mistaken with “a treatment of choice” instead of the “last resort.” From what I have seen, most people do not understand the implication of cutting and  surgically altering the body at all. The truth is that our body is not a car and parts can’t be made in a factory  and swapped in the nearest body shop.

No matter how technically advance surgery  is, a surgeon  cuts through and alters oeenergy pathways, meridians that are very important in the proper function of the body. These pathways can be compared to a watering system in the garden or electrical system in your house.  They supply energy and nerve signals to particular parts of the body such as  organs, muscles and skin.  When they are severed and cut through,  they can never be completely restored which ultimately  affects the function of different body parts.  This effect  can be less or more severe depending on the affected area.  No one really understands the impact of surgery  fully and completely including the surgeons.  In fact they often offer surgery just because that is what they do best and what they get paid for.

I have discussed this with my physiotherapist Dean Smith and here is his opinion:

Stomach Bloat – Gastric Dilation Volvulus in Dogs – Holistic Approach

Saturday, May 21st, 2011

Recently I  conducted a survey  on the incidence of GDV in dogs. What I have learned is that  dogs that are fed processed food are about five times as likely to suffer from a bloat than dogs  that are fed raw or cooked food.

Most veterinary textbooks state that gastric dilation volvulus  is a serious life threatening condition which is caused by general  breed  predilection, fermentation and gas formation in  the stomach and is often caused by (more…)

Leslie Kennedy – The face of our holistic animal care community -

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

Most of  the time I write a blog about health  advice but today I decided to write about person that I admire for many reasons. Her name is Leslie Kennedy and she has been the dedicated publisher and founder of BC Pet Connection Magazine.

I met Leslie several months ago at  an event organized by natural that the company in Vancouver.   I could see Leslie’s eyes that she deeply cares about her dogs Jazz and Freeway,  but  is also very  passionate  about our community cause of promoting gentle holistic approach to animal care and healing.

Originally, Leslie founded The BC Pet Connection to inform people about the health issues caused by vaccines. (more…)

Best way to avoid surgery when your dog eats an undigestible object

What to do when your dog ingests a foreign body?

A friend of mine  called me recently and was very upset.  This was the second time his dog Barkley had eaten a mango pit.  The first time, he threw it up, but  this time,  it stayed down for more than a week.
The local vet recommended  surgery and my  friend was not  really happy about slicing Barkley’s stomach open. He called  me to see if there was anything else we could do.

The pit was large and flat and it was unlikely to go further than the stomach.  I thought  if  we made Barkley throw up, it could get stuck in the esophagus.  We had to find a way  that would  make the mango pit slippery enough  to make it slip out without complications.

Dr. Dobias’ Healing News – October 2007 (6th Edition)

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Dear Friends,

Since selling my physical veterinary practice, many of you have been wondering if I have left veterinary medicine  and decided to  self indulge in beach runs, yoga and kite-boarding. Every time I hear this version, I want to  shout out “How could I”?! All these activities are just a way of recharging and giving me more energy and inspiration to work with you and your animal friends.

Leaving the clinic and the transition to online and telephone consultations has  given  me an opportunity to connect with people from different parts of the world. This way I am starting to get a better idea of what work is needed  for the animals of this  planet.

Freeing the time from my physical practice and all the duties  that  it involved,  I have  had time and energy to write,  create and be there for you in ways that I could not before.  With much more practice my Czenglish (Czech + English ) is slowly turning into English.. Something I thought was pretty much impossible.

After spending 6 days in the clinic of my friend  in a Vancouver suburb,  I realized that I needed to get  out  there and teach people simple  things from how to feed their pets, how to exercise them,  how to look after their needs, how to save money on veterinary care,  prevent chronic disease  and even  cancer.   Over the years I have learned to recognize which animals are likely to get ill in the future. Therefore one of my goals is  to teach you to recognize when “something is cooking” before it is too late.

Imagine, I even decided to ditch my fear of public speaking  and English writing because I   feel so strongly that I should not keep the gift of knowledge  I have received and have been very grateful for.

So often we hear or read that the society’s goal is to beat this or that  disease.  It seems like the  battle  is nowhere close to ending.  One of the reasons is that when conventional medical knowledge beats the disease, the body gets beaten in the process. The aftermath of this battle  often does not provide a better quality of life but survival with an array of new problems called side effects. The impact of stress and the way we lead our lives  on emotional and physical  level  effects hugely our health. Sadly, medical research and general public has been mainly focused on the external factors and largely ignore the importance of our state of mind.

My personal experience with watching  my brother, who had a  brain tumour, fading away and my father who suffered from prostate cancer makes me feel the urge to pass on the message even more.

At times when the standard of the medical system is measured  by the number of MRI scanners per capita,  I believe that we need to refocus the lens of our medical efforts on disease  prevention and life style  choices.  This applies to people and pets.

It is clear that the ball of change is  rolling,  otherwise you would not be reading these lines.

My goal is to bring you back to  a point,  where you, will become actively involved in your pets’ and your own healing process.  This  doesn’t mean that  you will never need to go and  see a vet or your family doctor. What I mean is that you will become more consciously aware of what deep inside you already know.

Many of  you have come up with ideas, others have referred  your friends and forwarded my newsletters to friends and family.  I would like to thank you for your special contribution. Together  we  can continue to create the much needed  shift on a greater scale.

Lets also remember that while we  are creating this shift,  we pay attention to spending more time with friends,  family, our beloved animal friends and even strangers who are our fellow “travelers” on this Earthly journey.  Lets embrace this process of our evolution with an open heart.

I hope you will enjoy the 6th edition of Healing News.

With Gratitude

Dr. Peter Dobias
